On behalf of the Department of A.I.H.C. & Archaeology, BHU,
Varanasi, we are happy to inform you that our department is going to organize
the XLVII Annual Congress of the Epigraphical Society of India jointly with
the XLI Annual Congress of the Place Names Society of India from 04 to 06
November 2022. We are happy to extend our invitation to you for attending the
congress at BHU, Varanasi (U.P.). We hope you have already received the first
circular sent by the secretaries of both the societies. Only those participants
who have sent the Registration Fee, Registration Form, and Abstract in time
will find a place in the conference programme.
This conference is meant for the Life/Annual Members of both the
societies. The non-members wishing to participate in the conference are
requested to enroll themselves as a member and send the desired membership
fee to the authorities of either of the societies. The membership fee can be paid
at the conference venue also.
The delegates are requested not to come with their family or guests
who are not a member of ESI because of the shortage of accommodation. The
delegates must inform the Convener confirming their participation and the
date and time of their arrival and departure. This would help us to make the
necessary arrangements.
The weather in Varanasi during the first week of November is very
pleasant and moderately cool. Participants are advised to bring light woolen
clothes. The accommodation will be arranged in BHU guest houses only.
Those requiring Hotel accommodation are requested to make their own
arrangements. However, they can contact organizers for advice for the same, if
needed. The Airport is about 22 Km from the University Campus. Varanasi
Railway and Bus Stations are located within 8 km from the University campus.
You can reach the destination by taxi or rickshaw.
We once again request the members to extend their full co-operation
to the organizers and abide by the conditions outlined above to ensure the
smooth and dignified functioning of the conference. You may contact us if any
assistance is needed in this regard.
The Conference Includes:
1. The Academic Session includes theme on the topics such as 1)
Historiography of epigraphic studies in India, 2) New discoveries – its
significance and contributions, 3) Social history, 4) Trade routes and
economic history, 5) Political and religious history, 6) Cultural history, 7)
Ancient territorial divisions and its geographical location, 8) Review of
significant inscriptions and 9) New ideas on origin and evolution of script.
2. National Seminar on 'Ancient Indian Religion and Traditions'
which includes the discussion on 1) Nature and concept of Indian religion
and traditions in ancient India, 2) Dynamics of religion and tradition in
Indian text, 3) Interpretation of classical texts in the light of religious
traditions and beliefs, 4) Ancient Indian traditions as the soul of Indian
culture, 5) Reflections of philosophical thoughts in Indian religion, 6)
Religion and traditions in Indian art, 7) Religion and science in the light of
archaeology and literature, 8) Religion and folk traditions, 9) Religion and
social structures as known through numismatic and epigraphic sources.
3. On this occasion, a Souvenir is being released containing abstracts of
the research papers to be presented in the Conference and the National
Seminar. Delegates and participants are requested to send it by 04th
October 2022.
