On 23 March 2023, Shri Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha membership following his conviction. However, the use of the Saka calendar in the notification issued by the Lok Sabha has caught the attention of many.
The Saka calendar is a national calendar adopted on 22 March 1957, along with the Gregorian calendar, for official purposes such as the Gazette of India, news broadcasts by All India Radio, calendars issued by the Government of India, and government communications to the public. It is based on the Saka Era with Chaitra as its first month and has a normal year of 365 days.
The Lok Sabha notification shows the date of 24 March 2023 (GC) alongside Chaitra 3, 1945 (SC), the dates of the national calendar and the Gregorian calendar, with 1 Chaitra falling on 22 March normally and on 21 March in a leap year, Śaka Samvat is generally 78 years behind of Gregorian Calendar, except during January to March, when it is behind by 79 years. While the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi is a significant event, the use of the Saka calendar in the notification serves as a reminder of the importance of the national calendar in official communications and its permanent correspondence with the Gregorian calendar.
