Celebrating India's rich archaeological heritage, Finance Minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, today laid the foundation stone of the Adichanallur On-Site Museum. Crafted by the expertise of the Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI) Trichy Circle, this remarkable museum will display ancient artifacts & urn burials in their original context, offering a captivating journey into the past. The event was graced by the presence of Hon’ble MP, Smt. Kanimozhi along with other Government officials.
The Adichanallur site in Tamil Nadu is one of five archaeological sites designated as Iconic Sites with on-site museums as part of a major initiative announced during the presentation of the Union Budget 2020-21, aimed at revitalizing heritage tourism in India.
Nestled over 114 acres near the picturesque banks of the Thamirabarani river, the Adichanallur On-Site Museum is ingeniously designed with two quadrants of trenches shielded by toughened glass. This innovative feature allows visitors to walk atop the glass and witness the meticulously preserved artifacts, including ancient pottery, relics, skeletons, & funeral articles, exactly as they were discovered in their original in-situ positions.
Enveloped in a sturdy shelter, the museum ensures the timeless preservation of priceless cultural treasures, securing invaluable artifacts for generations to come. A pioneering concept, a first in India, grants visitors an intimate encounter with history, offering an authentic experience of these invaluable relics. Now, visitors can marvel at ancient artifacts akin to their original discovery, thanks to this innovation.
As part of the ongoing development, the sturdy shelter's impact on the artifacts will be meticulously studied, tracking factors such as relative humidity, wind flow, weather effects, rainwater, and overall weather impact. Additionally, plans are underway for an on-site interpretation center within the precincts of the archaeological site.
The Adichanallur On-Site Museum stands as a beacon of India's commitment to preserving and presenting its archaeological legacy. With its innovative design and immersive experience, it is poised to become a must-visit destination.
