In a significant move, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has resumed underwater explorations off the coast of Dwarka, Gujarat, after a gap of two decades. This initiative aims to uncover and study underwater cultural heritage, with a focus on the ancient city of Dwarka, which holds significant historical and religious importance.

In this exploration, Professor Alok Tripathi, Additional Director General of the ASI, is leading the team, which includes H.K. Nayak, Director (Excavations and Explorations); Dr. Aparajita Sharma, Assistant Superintending Archaeologist; Ms. Poonam Vind; and Rajkumari Barbina. Notably, this is the first time female archaeologists are participating in such a project, marking a progressive step in the field of underwater archaeology in India.

The team has chosen an area near the Gomati Creek for their initial investigations.

Alok Tripathi Sir told The New Indian Express that explorations would be conducted in a phased manner and in the first phase, locations are being identified for the research. “Based on findings in the first phase, further activities will be planned and scope of explorations will be expanded accordingly,” he said. He also shared his plans to involve young archaeologists in the project, emphasizing the importance of training and engaging the next generation in underwater archaeology.

The ongoing underwater investigations mark a significant step in ASI’s mission to safeguard India’s rich underwater cultural heritage. An ASI official stated, “This project will be a milestone in maritime archaeology studies in India.” By combining advanced research techniques with a focus on training and inclusivity, the ASI aims to uncover and preserve the submerged history of Dwarka, contributing to a deeper understanding of India’s maritime past.
