Course Concept:
This course explores Jainism by studying its art and archaeology. It looks at the history, social changes, and religious transformations of Jainism in India. The program provides a detailed look at Jain temples, monastic life, architecture, religious symbols, important inscriptions, and how support from patrons helped spread Jainism.
A field trip to an important Jain heritage site may be organized (subject to change).
Course Objectives:
To offer an opportunity to students to understand the rich Jain literary and philosophical heritage of India’s past and also in the present society
To introduce them to the history of Jainism in India and Jain pilgrimage centres of India.
To acquaint the students with a basic outline of history and archaeology of Jainism and its relationship to various sources of study.
To study the art, archaeology and history of Jainism through analytical and contextual insights.
To get acquainted with the various processes involved in the emergence and spread of Jainism in ancient and Medieval India.
To give an idea of the various processes that have went on to impact the ancient and later day nature of Jainism.
Course Outcomes: Participants will gain a thorough understanding of Jain art, architecture, and archaeological materials, and will be equipped with tools to study the processes of Jainism’s emergence, dissemination, and transformations in India.
Eligibility: Any graduation from a UGC recognized university.
Examination: Evaluation is as per university rules with a 75% attendance requirement.

Pattern of Examination:
Internal assessment: 50 marks (including tests, essays, group discussions, presentations, etc.)
External examination: 50 marks (online mode)
Terms of Passing: A minimum of 40% in both internal and external examinations is required to pass. Grades will be awarded as follows:
