The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has recently released the list of shortlisted candidates for the position of Deputy Superintending Archaeologist in the Archaeological Survey of India, under the Ministry of Culture. Position Details


The recruitment is for the position of Deputy Superintending Archaeologist with a total of 67 vacancies distributed as follows:

  • ST (Scheduled Tribe): 04 vacancies

  • SC (Scheduled Caste): 10 vacancies

  • OBC (Other Backward Classes): 18 vacancies

  • EWS (Economically Weaker Sections): 06 vacancies

  • UR (Unreserved): 29 vacancies

  • PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities): 02 vacancies


Please Note: The 2 PwBD vacancies are part of the overall 67 vacancies, not additional. They are included within the UR category.


Essential Qualifications (EQ)

Candidates must meet the following educational and experiential qualifications to be considered for the position:


Educational Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Archaeology or Master's degree in Indian History (with Ancient Indian History or Medieval Indian History as a subject or paper) or Master's degree in Anthropology (with stone-age Archaeology as a subject or paper) or Master degree in Geology (with Pleistocene Geology as a subject or paper) from a recognized University or Institute, and

  • Postgraduate or Advanced Diploma in Archaeology of a duration of at least one year from a recognized University or Institute OR Field experience of at least three years in Archaeology.


Desirable Qualification:

  • Doctorate degree in Archaeology or Indian History or Anthropology or Geology from a recognized University or Institute


Scrutiny and Modalities


The scrutiny process is conducted based on the information provided in the online applications and supporting documents. The process strictly adheres to the recruitment rules and criteria, and only relevant experience and qualifications are considered. The categories for shortlisting and rejections are as follows:


  • To Be Called for Interview: Candidates meeting the Essential Qualifications (EQ) criteria.

  • Rejections: Candidates lacking essential qualifications (LEQ), incomplete applications, and other non-compliant submissions.

Category-Specific Interview Information

Based on the official notification released on the UPSC website, here are the numbers of candidates called for interviews for each category:


  • PwBD (LV - Low Vision): 0 candidates

  • PwBD (D/HH - Deaf/Hard of Hearing): 0 candidates

  • ST: 22 candidates

  • SC: 59 candidates

  • OBC: 86 candidates

  • EWS: 9 candidates

  • UR: 84 candidates

  • OBC, Creamy Layer: 02 candidates


In total, 260+02 candidates have been called for interviews. If you need more details or have any other questions, feel free to ask!

It is important to note that OBC candidates who fall under the "creamy layer" are treated as part of the General (Unreserved) category.

Candidates who wish to represent against their rejection can submit substantive grounds/reasons via email to sort4.upsc@nic.in by 23/02/2025. It is crucial to note that representations received after this date will not be entertained, and individual replies will not be given to any emails.
